For over 30 years, Rajendra Patra swept Bhawanipatna’s streets before the town woke up — unseen, uncelebrated, unwavering.

This Republic Day, that quiet dedication found its way to Rashtrapati Bhavan, as President Droupadi Murmu invited him to her ‘At Home’ reception.
Rajendra never worked for applause. He is a contractual sweeper earning ₹9,000–₹10,000 a month, supporting a family of five, including his paralysed wife.
He worked because missing a day meant losing wages,
because his family needed him,
because dignity lives in showing up.
Through illness, hardship, and even the pandemic, he kept the town clean.
The honour is rare. The resilience behind it is rarer.
Today, Rajendra owns little beyond a modest home under the IAY and dreams of one thing:
a permanent municipal job that offers dignity and security after decades of service.
