Induction of labour means starting labour artificially when it doesn’t begin on its own. There are a few types, depending on your cervix, weeks of pregnancy, and medical need. 🔹 Types of Labour Induction 1️⃣ Prostaglandins (Cervical ripening) Given as gel, tablet, or pessary (placed in vagina) Softens and opens the cervix Often the first step Labour may start naturally after this 2️⃣ Balloon catheter (Foley balloon) A small balloon is inserted into the cervix and gently inflated Helps the cervix open mechanically Used when cervix is not ready No medicine involved 3️⃣ Oxytocin drip (Pitocin / Syntocinon) Given through IV Causes regular contractions Used when cervix is already a bit open Labour contractions can be stronger with this 4️⃣ Breaking the waters (Amniotomy) Doctor breaks the amniotic sac Usually done after cervix is open Labour often starts or speeds up after this 5️⃣ Combination method Example: Prostaglandin ➝ Balloon ➝ Oxytocin Very common approach 🔹 When induction is advised?
