The Supreme Court of India has permitted the withdrawal of life support for Harish Rana, a 32-year-old man who had remained in a vegetative state since a severe brain injury in 2013.
In the judgment, J. B. Pardiwala emphasised that when the possibility of recovery is extremely low, the state’s interest in preserving life must give way to the individual’s dignity. The ruling reinforces the importance of a patient’s right to a dignified death, prioritising the patient’s best interests in end-of-life decisions.
