There are two stories prevalent about Draupadi's past virtue: - First virtue: Draupadi once helped a sage when his loincloth got washed away in water. Draupadi tore a part of her saree and gave it to the sage, thereby saving her shame. It was because of this virtue that Draupadi's honor was saved during the Mahabharata war, when Dushasan tried to disrobe her. - Second virtue: According to another legend, when Lord Krishna took out Sudarshan Chakra to kill Shishupala, his finger was cut. Draupadi tore a part of her saree and tied it on his finger, which stopped his bleeding. Lord Krishna had assured Draupadi that he would definitely repay this debt. And this was the reason why Lord Krishna saved Draupadi's modesty when she was being disrobed. Lord Krishna made Draupadi's saree endless, thereby saving her modesty.¹ ²
