TamBrahm dialect:
May I, with or without your kind permission, continue to make another provocative post since I have been at it for the last couple of days? I have been asked by so many as to why I speak in TamBrahm Tamil dialect even in public podcasts. Well, part of the reason is practice. I only speak Tamil with family or close friends in San Francisco. So, naturally, it's my native TamBrahm dialect. However, even when I was a kid, I did speak TamBrahm dialect - especially defiantly so when others questioned it. Beyond all that, here's my simple response. There are just 1.6 million TamBrahms in the world. Most have left TN. Nowadays, I rarely see youngsters in family gatherings or functions when I visit India. It's mostly retired folks. On the other hand, here in San Francisco, functions are packed with chirpy and flirtatious youngsters - girls and boys. It's a pleasure to hear their Americanized TamBrahm dialect. I don't know whether our population in the US would ever reach a critical mass enough to sustain our culture. But one thing is sure. If you're in TN, then you're not going to hear TamBrahm dialect for long. As the residual community leaves, our dialect would become a relic of a bygone era. In the decades to come, populations of vaidkas, archakas, and other TamBrahms would disappear. So, why not enjoy (or continue to ridicule) our dialect while it lasts?
The attacks on TamBrahms began with the Christian missionaries. It was amplified by Dravidianists. It's echoed by a section of reform-obsessed Hindus. The last of these aren't necessarily abusive of TamBrahms but they have been so brainwashed that they have been desensitized to the hurt they cause Brahmins. This section would abuse orthodox acharyas and sacred texts which Brahmins hold in high regard. This section would cheer on when Brahmin archakas are violently displaced from the temples and replaced by archakas from other jatis. It doesn't matter to this section that it's violating a sacred right of the Brahmin archakas. The abuse of Brahmins is pervasive in TN media.
But then think of what would be left of Hinduism when the last TamBrahm turns off the lights and leaves TN. Who is going to fill in the void? This stretches beyond the sacred realm. Until the abomination called reservation was introduced in IITs, the only Tamil jati which cracked IIT JEE / Advanced on merit from TN is TamBrahms. Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada settlers in TN have made it but nobody from a Tamil jati except TamBrahms made the cut on merit. Until the TamBrahm population dwindled, TamBrahms were a significant presence in IITs.
What happened to them? Well, they moved to the Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Now, they innovate for America and generate wealth. They are trying to preserve traditions as much as they can. But it is the loss of TN. After all, in this emerging tech world, it's your super high IQ clusters which will lead innovation that results in wealth generation for all. If India and TN were to import innovative ideas from the US then they won't ever become a power to reckon with. They would cease to be viable entities. But, who cares? We should vehemently deny that IQ exists and accuse anyone who presents these facts as racist, casteist, Nazi and worse!
