In the tribal-dominated Sundargarh district of Odisha, maternal and child mortality rates have reached alarming levels. Over the last three years (2022-2025), a total of 2,611 deaths have been recorded, including 1,653 stillbirths, 838 newborn deaths, and 120 maternal deaths. On average, one stillbirth occurs every 1.5 days. Key reasons cited include anemia, malnutrition, lack of health infrastructure, and delays in ambulance services. Despite schemes like 'Matrujyoti' offering free scans and treatment, poor implementation at the grassroots level remains a major concern.
