A new World Health Organization (WHO) report reveals that contaminated food caused 1.5 million deaths and sickened 86.6 crore people globally in 2021. Children under five are the most vulnerable, accounting for one-third of foodborne illness cases. Chemical pollution, specifically arsenic and lead, is responsible for 73% of these deaths, leading to cancer and heart disease. The report highlights that Africa and South-East Asia are worst hit, causing a $310 billion productivity loss to the global economy.
