On 15 May 2026, during a Supreme Court hearing in New Delhi related to a petition challenging the Delhi High Court’s senior advocate designation process, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant made controversial remarks while criticising alleged fake degree holders and attacks on institutions.
During the hearing, he said, “There are youngsters like cockroaches, who don't get any employment and don't have any place in profession. Some of them become media, some become RTI activists, and they start attacking everyone.”
The remarks sparked widespread backlash online and later led to the viral “Cockroach Janta Party” movement. On 16 May 2026, Surya Kant issued a clarification stating that his comments were aimed at people entering professions using “fake and bogus degrees,” not unemployed youth in general.
