The Mahanadi River in Subarnapur district has dried up in several places, severely affecting the livelihoods of people in Birmaharajpur and Ulunda blocks. Delayed rainfall and reduced water flow have turned the riverbed into sandbars, hindering Kharif cultivation and causing a drinking water crisis. Local fishermen are facing financial distress due to low fish production. To address the situation, calls for constructing in-stream storage projects at Godhaneswar and Khairamal have been raised by political leaders.
