On the occasion of International Sports Day, this article reflects on traditional village games of Odisha like Pithu, Latu (tops), Bati (marbles), and Guchi Tandu (Gilli-danda). While these games have historical significance dating back to the Mahabharata and Lord Krishna's childhood, they are losing popularity to modern toys and cricket. Pithu is played in nearly 30 countries under various names. Efforts like tournaments in Kalahandi are being made to preserve Bati games. The article highlights how modern lifestyles are replacing these ancient, culturally rich outdoor activities.
