Kalita Maji from Ausgram emerged as one of the most talked about winners of West Bengal State elections, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Around 38 years old, she comes from a financially weak background and previously worked as a domestic help earning about ₹2,500 per month, while her husband is a plumber.
Despite limited formal education and modest assets (around ₹4.9 lakh), she built her political journey as a grassroots worker, lost the 2021 election, but secured victory in 2026 with over 1 lakh votes, defeating a candidate from All India Trinamool Congress.
Her “maid to MLA” journey is a symbol of social mobility and grassroots politics.
