The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is considering a proposal to replace traditional paper currency with polymer (plastic) notes. Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that the plan is in its early stages. This move aims to increase the lifespan of currency, reduce printing costs, and curb counterfeiting as plastic notes are durable and hard to forge. A similar pilot project involving 10 rupee notes was proposed in 2014 for five cities, including Bhubaneswar, but was delayed due to technical issues. Now, with rising cash circulation, the RBI is revisiting this historic change.
