Utkal Divas, or Odisha Day, is celebrated on April 1st every year to commemorate the formation of Odisha as a separate province on April 1, 1936, the first Indian state created on a linguistic basis. It marks the successful end of a long, historic struggle by Odia leaders to unite Odia-speaking regions previously under Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa Presidency rule.
