Cyclopia is an extremely rare and typically fatal congenital disorder where the eyes do not properly separate, resulting in a single eye or a single eye socket. It is a severe form of holoprosencephaly, a brain condition where the brain fails to divide into two hemispheres. Infants with cyclopia often have other severe facial abnormalities, such as an absent nose or a proboscis, and malformed ears, and usually die shortly after birth. Causes Genetic Abnormality: Cyclopia results from a genetic problem during early fetal development, occurring between the 18th and 28th day of gestation. Failure of Brain Division: The condition arises from the incomplete separation of the prosencephalon (forebrain) into two distinct hemispheres. Gene Mutations: Mutations in genes like SHH (Sonic Hedgehog) and PAX6 are linked to holoprosencephaly and thus cyclopia. Teratogens: Exposure to certain toxins, including alcohol, street drugs, some medications, and certain environmental factors, can increase the risk.
