It is not the same as the lake of fire, also known as Gehenna. “The realm of the dead below is all astir to meet You at Your coming; it rouses the spirits of the departed, those who were leaders in the world.” (Isaiah 14:9) “What does ‘He ascended’ mean except that He also descended to the lower, earthly regions?” (Ephesians 4:9) “As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so one who goes down to the realm of the dead does not return.” (Job 7:9) “You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.” (Psalm 88:6) “When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.” (Revelation 9:2) “When they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them.” (Revelation 11:7; 17:8; 20:2,13,14) “I see a god coming up out of the earth,” the woman said to Saul. (1 Samuel 28:13) “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Samuel said to Saul. (1 Samuel 28:15) “I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the realm of the dead.” (Genesis 37:35) Beloved saints of the Lord, all these verses show that the realm of the dead (Sheol/Hades) is a lower region within the earth. Sheol/Hades = Paradise + Torment (rest for the righteous + suffering for the wicked) 🔲 There are two divisions in the realm of the dead: 1) Paradise: The place where the saints who die in the Lord rest in comfort. 2) The place of torment: Where the souls of the wicked suffer without comfort and await final judgment. These two areas form one realm, but they are separated. Scripture teaches that a great chasm exists between them. Those in one place cannot cross to the other.
