Induction of labour means starting labour artificially when it doesn’t begin on its own. There are a few types, depending on your cervix, weeks of pregnancy, and medical need.
🔹 Types of Labour Induction
1️⃣ Prostaglandins (Cervical ripening)
Given as gel, tablet, or pessary (placed in vagina)
Softens and opens the cervix
Often the first step
Labour may start naturally after this
2️⃣ Balloon catheter (Foley balloon)
A small balloon is inserted into the cervix and gently inflated
Helps the cervix open mechanically
Used when cervix is not ready
No medicine involved
3️⃣ Oxytocin drip (Pitocin / Syntocinon)
Given through IV
Causes regular contractions
Used when cervix is already a bit open
Labour contractions can be stronger with this
4️⃣ Breaking the waters (Amniotomy)
Doctor breaks the amniotic sac
Usually done after cervix is open
Labour often starts or speeds up after this
5️⃣ Combination method
Example:
Prostaglandin ➝ Balloon ➝ Oxytocin
Very common approach
🔹 When induction is advised?
Post-date pregnancy (after 40–41 weeks)
High BP / diabetes
Low amniotic fluid
Baby growth issues
Medical risk to mother or baby.
