WildLens Chronicles on Instagram: "The Tallest Bird to Ever Walk the Earth 🌿🇳🇿 It looks like something from a fantasy movie, but this giant actually lived in New Zealand until relatively recently. This is the South Island Giant Moa. The Height: They stood up to 12 feet (3.6 meters) tall—that is nearly two times the height of a tall human! The Wings: If you look closely, you’ll notice something missing. Moa are the only birds known to science that had zero wings. They didn't even have the tiny vestigial nubs that emus or kiwis have. The Predator: They were so big that their only natural predator before humans arrived was the Haast’s Eagle—a massive eagle with a 10-foot wingspan that hunted them from the sky. Sadly, they were hunted to extinction by the late 1400s. Standing in this fern forest, you can almost hear the ground shaking as they walked. #GiantMoa #NewZealandHistory #ExtinctAnimals #Megafauna #NaturalHistory #Paleontology #BirdFacts #AncientEarth #NatureEducation"
