Today Revelation Meditation : 04/02/2026 The book of Revelation Explanation Post -209 XVIII) “I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, ‘Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers.’ (Revelation 11:1) Dear saints of the Lord, the divine writer John was given a measuring rod resembling a staff. It is not stated who gave this rod to him. Traditionally, a Jewish measuring rod was about six cubits long—approximately ten feet. We understand that the command to measure came from an angel who descended from heaven. Throughout Scripture, we see several instances where measuring takes place (Ezekiel 40:3, 6; Zechariah 2:1; Amos 7:7–9; Revelation 21:15–16). The Word of the Lord also reveals that the wall of the holy city, the glorious New Jerusalem, is measured with a golden rod. The angel commands John to measure three things: 1) The temple of God 2) The altar 3) The worshipers there Dear saints, at the beginning of Revelation we reflected on how John functioned as one who saw, heard, and wrote about the fellowship of God’s people. “Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.” (Revelation 1:19) This confirms the events mentioned above. “I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour.” (Revelation 10:10) According to this verse, John obeyed the angel’s command by taking and eating the little scroll. Revelation 11:1 shows that the spiritual ministry entrusted to John is increasing in significance. He is given the solemn responsibility of measuring and evaluating the temple of God, the altar, and the worshipers. We may understand that the purpose of measuring is to discern their spiritual authenticity and to grant protection accordingly. Revelation 7:4 speaks of the 144,000 from Israel who receive a seal, indicating that they are counted worthy to receive God’s appointed protection. Dear saints, after measuring the temple, John is also instructed to measure the altar. The word used in Scripture for altar is thusiastērion. In the New Testament, the term “altar” appears 24 times, and eight of those are found in Revelation. John is further commanded to measure the worshipers in the temple. Not everyone who comes to the house of God arrives in the same spiritual condition. We learn that God is deeply concerned with knowing the true spiritual state of those who worship Him. In this passage, John is used as an instrument of God’s evaluation. “It is written: ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’ So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” (Romans 14:11–12; see also Romans 2:6) These verses remind us that every person is compelled to give an account to God concerning themselves and their actions. The measuring rod given to John was six cubits (about ten feet), yet the average human grows to about six feet in height. From this, we can understand that in God’s sight humanity falls short and must therefore be measured by Him. In the ministry of Christ, Apostle I.
