Ira Singhal’s story is one of resilience and triumph. Born with scoliosis, a spinal condition causing a curved spine, she faced daily challenges most can only imagine.
From navigating school with her disability to being discouraged from joining college clubs, Ira faced obstacles at every turn. But her fascination with District Magistrates (DMs) during curfews inspired her passion for administrative roles and led her to pursue the UPSC CSE.
In 2010, Ira cleared the UPSC but was denied entry into the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) due to her disability.
Unwilling to accept this, she fought back with a three-year legal battle. In 2014, the court directed the government to allow her to join the service.
During those years, Ira attempted the UPSC again in 2011, 2012, and 2013, clearing it each time.
Finally, in 2015, Ira didn’t just clear the exam — she topped it with All India Rank 1, becoming the first specially-abled woman to achieve this remarkable feat.
Ira’s journey is a testament to hope and perseverance. As she told NDTV, “You’re the only person who has walked in your shoes. Do not let the world define you.”
