What’s it like being a woman in a male-dominated industry?

Captain Radhika Menon, born in Kodungallur, Kerala, stayed focused on her goals, letting neither fear nor discrimination stop her: “When you do your job, people have confidence in you, they accept you.”
She became India’s first female Merchant Navy captain, navigating not just stormy seas but a world full of doubts and stereotypes.
In June 2015, at the helm of the oil tanker Suvarna Swarajya, she spotted a distressed fishing boat, Durgamma, with seven stranded fishermen surviving only on ice.
Facing 60–70 knot winds and 9-meter waves, her courage and skill saved every life on board.
For this extraordinary act, she became the first woman to receive the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea in 2016.
Her story is not just heroism at sea—it’s about breaking barriers, leading with heart, and proving courage knows no gender.
