Did you know the Vedas influenced our modern concept of AM and PM?
We’ve all grown up learning AM = Ante Meridiem and PM = Post Meridiem.
But have you ever wondered that before (pre) and after (post) what?
Western education taught us this as Latin abbreviations. But the deeper truth lies in our own Vedic tradition.
AM = आरोहनम् मार्तण्डस्य (Aarohanam Martandasya)
—The rising of the Sun (before noon)
PM = पतनम् मार्तण्डस्य (Patanam Martandasya)
—The setting of the Sun (after noon)
In Sanskrit, मार्तण्ड means Surya (the Sun), which is recognized as the eternal clock of time itself.
So what we call AM and PM today was already explained thousands of years ago in the Vedas.
The same Vedic wisdom also calculated the speed of light centuries before modern science, through Mahārshi Sāyaṇa’s commentary on the Rigveda.
This explains that knowledge is not just Western or Eastern. It is eternal! And often, what we think is “modern” is simply a rediscovery of what our ancestors already knew.
Even time itself speaks Sanskrit.
