The Indian government is planning to mandate the blending of isobutanol with diesel to reduce pollution and enhance fuel security. Transport Ministry Secretary V. Umashankar indicated that the proposal might be implemented by the end of this year. Bharat Petroleum is already conducting trials with positive results. Isobutanol, derived from ethanol, offers higher energy density and lower corrosion compared to ethanol. Additionally, the government has tasked ARAI to study the potential of 100% isobutanol-powered flex-fuel engines.
