A 4-year-old child died in Kozhikode, Kerala, due to a Shigella bacterial infection, marking the state's first death from the disease. Health Minister K. Muralidharan announced intensified surveillance and preventive measures. Shigella primarily affects the intestines, causing symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and stomach pain, and spreads through contaminated food and water. While 123 cases were reported in Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta last week, authorities are also investigating symptoms in 164 students in Wayanad, though initial reports suggest those cases may not be linked to Shigella.
