The Manitoba government has passed a budget bill to eliminate Provincial Sales Tax (PST) on snacks, soft drinks, and prepared foods starting July 1, 2026, to provide inflation relief. Led by the NDP government, the session also approved increasing tax credits for homeowners to $1,700 and tenants to $675. Additional measures include healthcare reforms like setting nurse-to-patient ratios, ending mandatory nursing overtime, and removing the requirement for doctor notes for short-term illnesses up to seven days. While the government estimates $24 million in annual savings for residents, the opposition argues the impact is limited as basic groceries are already tax-exempt.
