Father Of Modern Tamil – U. V. Swaminatha Iyer
Born on February 19, 1855, U. V. Swaminatha Iyer rose from a modest background to become the man who revived Tamil’s lost soul. At a time when ancient Tamil literature lay scattered in palm-leaf manuscripts, neglected and fading, he chose a path few dared to walk. With relentless discipline, he travelled village to village, facing rejection, poverty, and physical hardship, patiently collecting, decoding, and preserving priceless works like Silappadikaram and Manimekalai.
His journey was not one of comfort. There were long periods of struggle, financial strain, and uncertainty. Yet, his character stood firm. Guided by deep respect for tradition and an unshakable sense of purpose, he turned adversity into achievement. His life reflected quiet strength, humility, and intellectual courage.
Deeply attached to his family and mentors, especially Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, he carried their values throughout his life. Though he lived a simple and largely solitary life, his work connected generations.
Swaminatha Iyer did not just preserve literature; he revived identity. His life is a reminder that true greatness lies in discipline, purpose, and service beyond self. A timeless role model for all.
