Dhadkai village in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district is known as the 'Silent Village' due to a high population of deaf and mute residents. The issue first surfaced in 1901 and has persisted across generations. While some locals attribute it to an ancient curse, scientists believe it is a result of genetic mutations caused by long-term endogamous marriages within a limited community. Despite these challenges, villagers communicate through sign language and lead normal lives through farming and animal husbandry. Researchers are currently studying the village to understand this rare genetic condition.
