The Sri Dhandeeswarar Temple in Velachery, Chennai, is a significant Shiva temple where the four Vedas and Lord Yama are said to have worshipped. According to mythology, the Vedas performed penance here to cleanse themselves of defects after being rescued from the demon Somasura. Originally called Vedacheri, the area became Velachery over time. Lord Yama also regained his lost powers after praying here and bathing in the holy Yama Teertham. The deity is named Dhandeeswarar because Yama placed his staff (Dhandam) here during worship. The temple features a five-tier Rajagopuram and is believed to grant longevity and restored positions to devotees.
