In a dramatic incident in Bihar's Khagaria district, a man accused of attempting to snatch a passenger's mobile phone from a moving train was caught by alert passengers, who held onto him outside the coach for nearly nine kilometres until the train reached the next station.
The incident took place aboard the Janhit Express on Friday night shortly after it departed from Mansi Railway Station. According to police, the accused allegedly tried to snatch a mobile phone from a passenger seated near the window. However, nearby passengers immediately grabbed his arm before he could escape.
Unable to free himself, the accused remained hanging outside the moving train until it reached Khagaria Railway Station. Passengers reportedly refused to let go of his arm despite the train's speed, fearing he could fall to his death if released. During the ordeal, the accused repeatedly pleaded for help, while some passengers were seen slapping him.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the footage, the accused gives different names and identities in an apparent attempt to mislead those questioning him.
Initially believing someone was trying to board the moving train, railway officials instructed the train to slow down. It later emerged that the man had allegedly been caught while attempting to snatch a mobile phone.
As soon as the train reached Khagaria station, Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel took him into custody. Police identified the accused as Barkat Mansoori, a resident of Mumtaz Mohalla in Naugachia, who allegedly has a history of theft and snatching cases.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and further investigation is underway.
The incident has drawn widespread attention, with many praising the passengers for preventing the theft while also ensuring the accused did not fall from the moving train.
