According to the 2024 Sample Registration System report, India's infant mortality rate (IMR) has significantly dropped to 24 per 1,000 live births from 30 in 2019. This improvement is attributed to better maternal care and a rise in institutional deliveries, reaching over 95%. Chhattisgarh has the highest IMR at 36, followed by UP and MP at 35. Goa and Sikkim performed best with an IMR of 7. However, neonatal mortality remains a challenge, as 73% of deaths occur within the first 28 days of birth.
