The Calcutta High Court has upheld the West Bengal government's decision to strictly enforce the Animal Slaughter Control Act of 1950. The court ruled that animal sacrifice on Bakrid is not an essential religious practice of Islam, citing previous Supreme Court judgments. It prohibited animal slaughter in public places and mandated fitness certificates from government veterinarians for any cattle slaughter, which is only allowed for animals over 14 years old or physically incapacitated. The bench of Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen rejected petitions from TMC MLA Akhruzzaman and Muslim organizations seeking relaxations for religious practices.
