The horrific incident involving a UPSC aspirant in Lucknow has once again shaken the conscience of the nation. According to reports, the young woman was allegedly held captive in a room for three days and subjected to gang rape. It is alleged that her so-called friend assaulted her on the first day and later, along with two others, continued the abuse for the next two days.
When her condition deteriorated, the accused reportedly took her to Charbagh railway station in a cab and put her on the Suheldev Express to Delhi. Traumatised and frightened, the victim informed her family after reaching Delhi, following which an FIR was registered. The victim is a resident of Jaunpur and was preparing for UPSC exams while staying in Delhi. The accused Shivam is also reportedly from Jalalpur, Jaunpur.
Such incidents are not limited to Lucknow or Uttar Pradesh alone. Crimes against women continue to emerge from different parts of the country. Until strict and swift punishment is ensured for such heinous crimes, fear among offenders will not end. The law must send a clear message that anyone who destroys a woman’s dignity will face the harshest consequences, regardless of family background, social influence, religion, caste, or political connections.
India has thousands of MPs and MLAs, yet on critical issues like women’s safety, political debates often seem louder than concrete action. Ensuring the safety and dignity of women should remain the highest priority for every government and institution.
Society, administration, and the justice system must work together to create an environment where daughters of this country can study, travel, and achieve their dreams without fear.
Women’s safety is not just a social issue — it is a reflection of the nation’s humanity and values.
