The first case of Nipah virus this year has been reported in Kerala's Kozhikode, where a 43-year-old patient is currently on ventilator support. The state government has sounded a high alert across the state and placed contacts of the infected individual under quarantine. This marks the sixth outbreak in Kerala since 2018. Nipah, primarily spread by fruit bats, has a high fatality rate and can cause brain inflammation. Health officials suspect the patient contracted the virus while cleaning a rented warehouse.
