The Supreme Court of India has issued fresh guidelines to expedite the judicial process, emphasizing the 'Bail, Not Jail' principle. A division bench led by Justice Surya Kant ordered that bail pleas must be decided on the day of hearing or within 24 hours. High Courts are instructed to deliver reserved judgments within 3 months and dispose of bail applications within 2 months. Trial courts are directed to conclude cases involving detainees within 6 months and sessions cases within 2 years. These measures aim to reduce the backlog of over 5.58 crore pending cases across India.
