High diesel prices have severely impacted the transport sector in India, leading to nearly 19 lakh trucks (about 20% of the fleet) going off the road. Transport agencies have increased freight rates by 10-15% due to four consecutive price hikes this month, which is expected to inflate the costs of vegetables and daily essentials. Small operators are the hardest hit, as diesel accounts for nearly 45% of their operating costs. Additionally, the price gap between bulk and retail diesel has caused congestion at retail petrol pumps. Oil companies, however, maintain that fuel supply remains normal across most of the country.
