The Anand Marriage Act 1909 will be fully implemented in Sikkim starting June 1, 2026. This follows a Supreme Court directive from September 2025 in the Amanjot Singh Chadha vs. Union of India case, which addressed administrative gaps. The Union Law Ministry issued a notification on May 14 after the Sikkim government framed the necessary registration rules. Previously, Sikh couples in Sikkim had to register their marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 due to the absence of specific state rules.
