1. The Engineering Reality
To be honest, a 1-TPI thread is extremely rare. In standard US Customary (Unified Thread Standard), a 1-inch bolt typically comes in two flavors:
1-8 UNC: (Coarse) 8 threads per inch.
1-12 UNF: (Fine) 12 threads per inch.
A 1-pitch thread would look more like a corkscrew or a worm gear than a standard bolt. The "lead" (the distance the nut moves in one full turn) would be a full inch, which is massive.
2. Common "1x1" Interpretations
If you are searching for this part, you might actually be looking for:
1" Diameter x 1" Length: You have a 1-inch thick bolt that is 1 inch long. In this case, you still need to know the TPI (usually 8).
NPT (Pipe Thread): A 1-inch nominal pipe thread. These don't use "1x1" notation, but are often confused when measuring physical dimensions.
ACME Threads: Used for power transmission (like a heavy-duty jack). These can have very low TPI counts, though 1-TPI is still an outlier.
3. Woodworking / Spindle Turning
If you are a woodturner, 1" x 8 TPI is the most common spindle size for small to medium lathes. If you see "1x1" in a hardware store bin, it almost always refers to:
Width: 1 inch
Length: 1 inch
Thread: (Check the fine print—it's likely 8 or 12)
Are you trying to find a replacement bolt for a specific machine, or are you designing something custom that needs a very fast lead?
