The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) finally allowed female wrestler Vinesh Phogat to compete in the 53kg category for the Asian Games selection trials after a dramatic standoff. Initially, the federation insisted she compete in the 50kg category, citing her previous international participations. Despite Supreme Court and Delhi High Court orders in her favor, the WFI resisted until Vinesh protested strongly against the alleged discrimination. Following the intervention of WFI President Sanjay Singh, she was permitted to participate. She will face competitors like Meenakshi Goyat and Antim Panghal in the trials, the winners of which will represent India at the Asian Games.
