The expansion project of NH-49 from Jharsuguda to Kanaktora, sanctioned with a budget of 2000 crore, is facing issues as locals and land mafias build dangerous, low-quality buildings near the highway to claim higher compensation. These structures are being built within 4 feet of the road with extremely poor material, posing a risk to commuters. While NHAI has started surveying and marking buildings for demolition, shopkeepers have approached the District Collector fearing eviction.
