A hantavirus outbreak on a luxury cruise ship traveling from Argentina to Cape Verde in the Atlantic Ocean has resulted in three deaths and seven confirmed cases. According to WHO, five additional suspected cases are under investigation. Hantavirus is a rodent-borne illness that primarily affects the lungs and has a high mortality rate of 38% to 54%. Experts state that while the virus is not typically transmitted person-to-person, it poses a severe risk in confined spaces. There is currently no specific antiviral treatment available. Indian health authorities suggest there is no immediate threat to the country as the outbreak is localized to the ship.
