The Wall

Rising tall and erect like the wall of an ancient fortress, it stood bearing countless advertisements in a myriad of beautiful colors. It served as the public proclamation board for all the joys and sorrows of that town. Sometimes, the unemployed would sit upon it to swap stories; at other times, they would spread out a towel and take a nap. Although constructed long before I was born, this wall kept pace with everyone and everything. It served as an identity marker for many, a designated meeting point, and—depending on the context—appeared at times as an auspicious symbol, and at others, as an inauspicious one. Whether announcing temple festivals, the distribution of *koozh* (porridge) as charity, real estate vacancies, job openings, or cinema releases, it was perpetually laden with information. As the very first thing to catch a passerby's eye—and offering a medium for cost-free advertising—that wall was in immense demand. Over time, the wall aged; the old cement began to crumble, and the paint peeled away, leaving its bare, weathered surface exposed like a gaping grin. Then, as the elections drew near, the fierce competition among political parties to secure space on that wall escalated into physical brawls, fistfights, and knife attacks. Ultimately—amidst the ensuing clashes rooted in caste and religious animosity—the poor wall collapsed; by morning, it lay sprawled flat on the ground, a truly pitiable sight.

பழைய கோட்டைச் சுவராய் எழுந்து நிமிர்ந்து எத்தனையோ விளம்பரங்களை அழகழகான வண்ணங்களாய்த் தாங்கி நின்றிருக்கிறது அவ்வூரின் சந்தோசங்கள் துக்க நிகழ்வுகளுக்கெல்லாம் அதுதாம் பிரகடனம் சில வேலையற்றவர்கள் அதிலமர்ந்து கதையளப்பதுமுண்டு துண்டை விரித்து தூங்குவதுமுண்டு நான் பிறக்கும் முன்பே கட்டமைக்கப்பட்ட சுவராக இருந்தாலும் அது எல்லார்க்கும் ஈடு கொடுத்தது பல பேருக்கு அடையாளமாகவும் சந்திப்பிற்கான குறியீடாகவும் சில நேரங்களில் மங்களகரமாகவும் சில நேரங்களில் அமங்கலமாகவும் காட்சி தரும் சுவர்; கோயில் திருவிழா கூழ் அன்னதானம் வழங்குதல் ரியல் எஸ்டேட் ஆட்கள் தேவை சினிமா என்று எப்போதும் நிறையாக தாங்கி நிற்கும் வழிப் போக்கர்க்கு முதலில் கண்ணில் படும் சுவரென்பதால் கட்டணம் செலவில்லாத விளம்பரம் என அச்சுவருக்கு ஏகப்பட்ட கிராக்கி காலப்போக்கில் சுவர் வயதாகி அதிலிருக்கும் பழைய சிமெண்ட் பெயர்ந்து பெயிண்ட் உரிந்து பல்லிளிக்க தேர்தல் நெருங்க நெருங்க அச்சுவரில் இடம் பிடிப்பதில் கட்சிக்காரர்களுக்குள் இருக்கும் கடும் போட்டியில் கைகலப்பு அடிதடி வெட்டுக் குத்து என ஆரம்பித்து சாதிமத சண்டையில் பாவம் சுவர் இடிந்து காலையில் மல்லாந்து கிடந்தது பரிதாபமாக
