Sheol/Hades = Paradise + Torment (rest for the righteous + suffering for the wicked) 🔲 There are two divisions in the realm of the dead: 1) Paradise: The place where the saints who die in the Lord rest in comfort. 2) The place of torment: Where the souls of the wicked suffer without comfort and await final judgment. These two areas form one realm, but they are separated. Scripture teaches that a great chasm exists between them. Those in one place cannot cross to the other. Revelation Study – Chapter 9: Meditation Article Beloved saints of God, the events described in Revelation chapters 8–10 take place during the blowing of the first seven trumpets. The period of the seven trumpets occurs during the second half of the Antichrist’s seven-year rule—the final three and a half years, known as the Great Tribulation. The first four trumpets occur in the first 21 months, which is the first portion of the Great Tribulation. Revelation 8:6–12 briefly describes the disasters that come upon the earth during these trumpets—hail, fire, blazing mountains, and the falling star called Wormwood. The fifth and sixth trumpets take place during the next 17 months of the Antichrist’s rule. Revelation 9:1–12 explains the opening of the Abyss and the release of the tormenting locusts. Revelation 9:13–21 describes the release of the four angels bound at the Euphrates River, followed by the 200 million horsemen who kill a third of mankind. The seventh trumpet is blown during the final four months of the Great Tribulation (because 21 + 17 = 38, and 42 months – 38 = 4). Revelation 10:6 and Revelation 11:15–18 reveal the events of this final trumpet. These terrible judgments especially strike the Antichrist and those who bear his mark. The Four Angels at the Euphrates Revelation 9:14 says, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” A voice coming from the four horns of the golden altar gives this command to the sixth angel holding the trumpet. In Revelation 7:1–3, four angels were holding back the winds of judgment until God’s servants were sealed. But here, judgment is released. The four angels who were bound are now set free. The Great River Euphrates The Euphrates is again mentioned in Revelation 16:12, where it is called the great river. In Genesis 2:14, it is one of the rivers that flowed from Eden. When God made His covenant with Abraham, He promised him the land stretching from the river of Egypt (the Nile) to the great river Euphrates (Genesis 15:18–21). The Euphrates forms part of Israel’s boundary (Deuteronomy 1:7; Joshua 1:4). This river is about 1,800 miles long and is one of the most important rivers of the Middle East, especially flowing through modern-day Iraq. It has always stood as a dividing line between the eastern and western worlds. Because this river originally flowed from Eden, many significant “first events” in Scripture are connected to this region: The first sin happened in this region (Genesis 3:1–6) The first murder occurred here (Genesis 4:8) The first war took place here (Revelation 9:15) The first tower—the Tower of Babel—was built here (Genesis 11:3–4) The first major city, Babylon, arose here (Genesis 11:3–4) Idolatry began here and spread to the world (Genesis 11:9) The Jews were also taken captive into Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar for seventy years (Daniel 9:2; Jeremiah 25:11; 29:10). Modern attempts to rebuild Babylon were made by Saddam Hussein along the Euphrates, and many expect the city to rise again during the Great Tribulation, because Revelation chapters 17 and 18 describe the final destruction of this Great Babylon.
