The Central Board of Secondary Education has recognized Maithili as a mother tongue/language subject from Class 1 up to the secondary level.
Maithili has also been included in the CBSE curriculum for the 2026–27 academic session.
This step is considered important for promoting regional languages and preserving the cultural identity of the Mithila region.
Many leaders and education supporters from Bihar have welcomed this decision and called it a proud moment for Maithili-speaking people.
