Sayram Lake is a stunning high-altitude lake in the Bortala Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It’s the largest and highest alpine lake in Xinjiang, known for its incredibly clear, sapphire-blue waters that reflect the sky like a giant natural mirror. Locals even call it “the last tear of the Atlantic” because warm, moist air from far-off ocean currents helps keep the lake’s ecosystem vibrant. In winter, a magical transformation takes place on Sayram Lake. As temperatures plunge, the surface begins to freeze, and huge sheets of ice form and drift across the water. Winds and temperature shifts break these sheets into shards that pile up along the shore in what people call the “ice push” phenomenon. These scattered ice pieces can glint like crystal under low sun, creating dazzling, almost otherworldly views that draw visitors and photographers from far and wide. The changing seasons make Sayram Lake especially beautiful. Before the ice fully forms in deep winter, parts of the lake still show open water beside gleaming ice, giving a vivid contrast of deep blue and bright white.
