Cladosporum family related fungi is growing in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant which is filled with high nuclear energy waste. This fungi is using the melanin pigment and transferring this ionisation radiation into a chemical energy which is basically a food. The greenish and black colour of this funngi is because of the melanin pigmentation. However, when the radiation is hitting the melanin molecules, it is trapping the free radicals and making a shield around the fungi against the radiation.
This whole process is similar to the photosynthesis. And also now scientists from nasa are studying more about this fungi because, according to them thi
