Noida-based Galgotias University was reportedly asked to vacate the India AI Impact Summit following a controversy over its display of a Chinese robotic dog, according to media reports. The university, however, said it did not receive any such order from the government and denied claiming the device as its own creation. The controversy erupted after the university showcased a surveillance robotic dog named “Orion” at the summit in Delhi. In a video from the event that later went viral, a university representative described the robot as part of the institution’s work under a Rs 350 crore artificial intelligence initiative. Netizens quickly pointed out that the machine closely resembled the Go2 model manufactured by Chinese robotics company Unitree, which is commercially available for about Rs 2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh. Several users accused the university of rebranding imported technology as a homegrown innovation. The issue gained wider attention after the robot appeared in a video titled “India’s ‘Sovereign Models’” posted by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In a statement posted on X, the university said it had procured the robotic dog from Unitree and was using it as an instructional tool to help students explore robotics and AI. However, the clarification was challenged by an X Community Note attached to the post, which said the university’s claim was misleading.
