Every year on the sacred occasion of Maha Shivaratri, the rare and highly revered Golden Shiva Murthy (Swarnamaya Shiva idol) is brought out from the treasury of the Mysore Palace for public darshan. Important facts about this divine tradition: The Golden Shiva idol is normally kept safely inside the royal treasury (Bhandara) of the Mysore Palace. This Murthy belongs to the royal family of Mysore, historically associated with the Wadiyar dynasty. It is taken out only once a year, exclusively on Maha Shivaratri. The idol is placed inside the palace temple known as Sri Prasanna Krishnaswamy Temple (within the palace complex). Special pooja, abhishekam, and rituals are performed by palace priests. Devotees are allowed to have darshan for a limited time only on that day. Security is extremely tight because of the Murthy’s immense spiritual and historical value.
