This day holds great historical importance because on 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into effect, and India officially became a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. On this day, India replaced colonial laws with its own Constitution. Historical Background On 26 January 1930, the Indian National Congress declared Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence). To honor this historic decision, the same date was chosen for the implementation of the Constitution in 1950. The Constitution was drafted under the leadership of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, who is known as the Architect of the Indian Constitution. Importance of the Constitution The Indian Constitution is the longest written constitution in the world. It guarantees: Fundamental Rights to citizens Fundamental Duties Directive Principles of State Policy It ensures equality, liberty, justice, and dignity for all citizens and establishes the rule of law in the country.
