The Plot
The Map: Marshal Sam Mackenna (Gregory Peck) kills an old Apache chief in self-defense and discovers a map to the legendary "Canyon del Oro". Skeptical, Mackenna memorizes and burns the map.
The Kidnapping: A Mexican outlaw named Colorado (Omar Sharif) kidnaps Mackenna, believing he has the map's contents memorized. Colorado forces Mackenna to lead his gang to the treasure.
Gold Fever: As word of the canyon spreads, a diverse and greedy group—including corrupt townsfolk, a cavalry sergeant (Telly Savalas), and bandits—joins the expedition.
The Journey: The group faces internal betrayals and attacks from Apaches who want to keep the sacred site hidden.
The Climax
Shaking Rock: The group reaches "Shaking Rock" (Spider Rock), where the rising sun's shadow points the way to a secret passageway into the canyon.
Destruction: Upon finding the massive vein of gold, the treasure hunters descend into a murderous frenzy. However, an earthquake (triggered by the Apache horses or spiritual forces) causes the canyon to collapse, burying the gold forever.
The Ending: Mackenna and his companion Inga escape the disaster. As they ride away, it is revealed that Mackenna's horse—the one previously owned by the corrupt Sergeant Tibbs—is carrying saddlebags stuffed with gold nuggets.
