America Wants the World — But Does the World Need America Any Longer?
For America, it seems that one country is never enough. Its ambitions increasingly appear to extend across the entire globe. From oil-rich nations such as Canada, Mexico, and Venezuela to strategically important territories like Greenland, American influence seeks to reach far beyond its borders. Donald Trump's desire to bring the Panama Canal back under American control and Washington's long-standing interest in dominating key maritime chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz are examples of this larger vision.
In modern geopolitics, oil is not merely a source of energy; it is a source of power. Although the United States does not directly govern Iraq's oil fields or refineries, it exercises significant influence over Iraq's economy through financial and commercial mechanisms. Many observers believe that Washington seeks to establish similar leverage over Iran. The insistence that Middle Eastern oil be traded primarily in U.S. dollars is part of the same strategy.
America's interests do not stop there. It needs China's rare earth minerals, which are essential for advanced technology and defense industries. It benefits from India's vast pool of skilled yet relatively inexpensive labor. At the same time, countries such as India, Japan, South Korea, Ukraine, Australia, and many European and Middle Eastern nations represent major markets for American weapons manufacturers. The more unstable the world becomes, the more valuable these markets become.
Underlying all of this is a strategic calculation: control the world's energy resources and trade routes, and you gain enormous leverage over emerging powers such as China and India. It is a vision of global influence built on oil, finance, trade, and military strength.
Yet there is a reality that Washington may be underestimating. While America needs the world for its prosperity and influence, the world may not need America to the same extent. Nations are increasingly diversifying their trade, building regional alliances, and seeking alternatives to American dominance.
The rest of the world appears to be recognizing this shift. Whether America recognizes it remains an open question. Because still the USA is in denial mode.
