On 2nd June 2026, An 84 year old man, Deep Rai of Bihar's Vaishali district, was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case that began in 1992. According to the prosecution, on 10 May 1992 (some reports mention 10 November 1992), a dispute broke out between Deep Rai's group and villager Adalat Rai and his wife Ramshaki Devi over the use of a village pathway. The accused allegedly arrived armed with weapons, scattered broken glass on the pathway, assaulted the couple when they objected, and opened fire during the clash. Police registered a case and filed a chargesheet in 1993. After a trial that lasted more than 33 years, during which four of the five original accused died, the Vaishali court found Deep Rai guilty under IPC sections related to rioting, rioting with deadly weapons, and attempt to murder, along with provisions of the Arms Act. The court then awarded him 10 years' imprisonment, and videos of the frail elderly convict being helped by two people while leaving court went viral nationwide. #bihar
